Body Paragraphs and Citing Sources

You can use PEEL or PEARL to build your paragraphs.  It's important to have a point for each paragraph.  Use the last sentence of the paragraph to link back to your overall point.  Here are some of the notes from our in class discussion.

Here's the sample paragraph from our sharks essay. 

Another reason to respect the shark is because of its power.  In Peter Benchley’s famous article, Misunderstood Monsters, he describes these creatures: “The pointed snout, the underslung mouth, the black eyes, the torpedo shape of the gunmetal gray body (12 feet long perhaps, although it looked to be at least 25)” (1995).  Here, Benchley’s description evokes images of torpedoes and guns—powerful weapons. No wonder we fear them. But these features should garner our respect as well.  Think about what the shark can do with that size.  Sharks are powerful swimmers and jumpers.  They can “break six feet of water” according to poet, Denise Levertov, another writer who shares Benchley’s fascination with sharks. She helps us see that sharks can jump to heights taller than us.   Levertov and Benchley both promote the idea that sharks are powerful but that is why we should respect, and even protect sharks.
